Inspiration Behind the Music

I had a friend who dreamt about starting a foundation that would help needy children here in the US. The name of his foundation was the Somebody Fund. The idea was that the person who we would refer to as somebody, usually is one with no moral or financial support. The aim of his foundation was to provide the much needed moral and financial support to children who fall through the cracks of society. He even had me compose a theme song that was suppose to motivate people to donate. Unfortunately, not long after I wrote the song for him, he died. It came as a shock to all of us because his death was sudden.

It is always a very sad thing to lose a friend, but whenever I think of him I am doubly sad. Here is the reason. I only attempted to share the gospel with him once. He seemed a little uncomfortable and politely changed the subject. I really regret that I did not make another attempt. In fact, when I think of our last conversation, I am ashamed. Since he was a financial adviser, he knew a lot about the stock market. I wanted to find out more about trading and how it is done and he was very happy to give me all the information I wanted.

The Gospel can make a person uncomfortable, especially if there are areas in ones life that have not been submitted to God. This makes it very difficult to share, even with those who we love. Now I wonder how far should we be willing to go to share the Gospel? Do we love others enough that we would do whatever it takes to make sure that they hear and understand the requirements of the Gospel, even if it means that we could lose their friendship?

My intention was to try to share the Gospel with him again, but I kept putting it off until it was too late. He was a very nice man and I don’t think I would have lost his friendship over more attempts to share the Gospel with him, but even if I did lose his friendship, would there not have been much more to gain if he had accepted Jesus Christ and become born again?

Lately, I have been thinking about John 3:16. The part of the verse that has captivated my mind are the words, “For God so loved the world.” God did not only love those who would appreciate the Gospel, he loved those who in the words of the apostle Paul, regard the cross as foolishness. (I Corinthians 1:18,23) Even now his love is extended to those who have nothing but contempt for the cross and the principle of love it teaches. God loves us too much to leave us in our sins. No matter the response, God’s love is constant and never changes. His love is given freely to all, in spite of the fact that most of the world has disregarded it.

When I look at the great commission I understand that Jesus wants us to love others in the same way. We are commanded to preach the Gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15) and yet Jesus says that only a few will find the path to eternal life. (Matthew 7:14) We have much to gain if those we love believe the Gospel, but if they don’t we can have the peace of knowing that we attempted to give them the best gift that anyone could ever receive. If you have had a similar experience to mine, you know what it’s like to have your fond memories of your loved one tainted by your failure to share the Gospel with them. If you have never experience this, then please do your best to make sure you don’t. Want to know the name of the song I wrote for his foundation? It was called give it away. Now isn’t that ironic?

  1. Thank you for sharing your encounter with your friend. God knows our motives and our fears so I would commend you for what you did for him. Trying counts. You will never know what he did after he left you. Jesus saves so leave it up to him.
