Inspiration Behind the Music

When I could see, I remember looking up into the night sky. I only had enough vision to see the moon. I could never make out the finer details of the night sky, but I always wondered what stars looked like. When I learned that on clear nights even the planets are visible, my vivid imagination was engaged. I was a child then, but even now I still find myself imagining the night sky, what earth looks like from a distance and the inner workings of outer space. The passing of the solar eclipse here in the US left me really wishing that I could be among the millions who had the privilege to view it.

Since Enoch walked with God until God took him, (Genesis 5:24) I often wonder whether he simply stepped out of time into eternity or whether he rose up from the ground in the same way that Jesus did when he went back to Heaven. (Acts 1:9-11) I can’t help wondering what Elijah saw as he rode in Chariots of fire (II Kings 2:11) rising higher and higher into the sky and what he saw in outer space on the way to Heaven. I wonder what went through his mind as he went pass the planets and the first time he saw Heaven from a distance.

There is one common denominator between living and dead believers, the promise Jesus made that He will come again. (John 14:1-3) According to his promise, He is returning for a specific reason, to take us back to Heaven. He is preparing a place for us, so that we can be with Him. God is the God of the living, not the God of the dead. (Matthew 22:31) Contrary to popular teaching, heaven is not a metaphysical place that good people go to when they die. According to (II Thessalonians’s 4:13-18) Those who are now dead and those who are alive when Jesus returns will return with Jesus together to the place He has prepared.

Together we will have the opportunity to view Earth from a distance and watch it fade into oblivion as we journey to the holy city. Like Elijah, we will ride in chariots of fire together with those who we said goodbye to through our tears of grief. We will travel far beyond the view of the most powerful telescopes and discover what unbelieving scientists cannot even imagine. Our discoveries will lead to even more questions about the universe, but because we will have eternity to learn about God’s creation and minds that expand as we learn, learning more about God and his universe will bring much joy and gladness.

A sanctified imagination allows believers to escape the difficult realities of this world and gives us glimpses of Heaven and the new Earth. I believe that we should think of our reward often and let our certainty of the fulfillment of God’s promises be evident in our lives. When the scoffers ridicule our faith in the promises of God as they often do, let us remember that he will keep His word and that soon our faith will be sight. When we finally leave Earth behind and begin our journey to the Holy City, there will be many wonderful sights to see along the way, but at some point we will see Heaven from a distance and many will pass along the news that Heaven’s in view. I am encouraging you to lift up your eyes of faith and use your sanctified imagination and catch a glimpse of Heaven now. By faith, I can see the land of peace and righteousness in the distance. It is closer now than it has ever been. Heaven’s in view!
