Inspiration Behind the Music

There is a very significant lesson all believers need to learn from the Sunflower. I heard that the Sunflower turns to the direction where there is the most sunlight, but recently I got the opportunity to witness them in action. My wife and son planted some Sunflower seeds and they were amazed at how quickly they grew. When they began to bud and blossom my wife took my hand to show me how the Sunflowers were turning to face the sunlight. We were all fascinated. At the moment, my son is five years old, but I want him to notice that just as the Sunflower knows where to turn, we also should know where to turn in our time of need.

Where do you turn first in your time of need? Are you like the Sunflower? When faced with the perplexities of life, at what point do you find yourself turning to the Sun of Righteousness? (Malachi 4:2) I really appreciate this lyric. “It’s no mystery. Every time I make my plans I come up short. That’s because I always use you as my last resort.” When doing God’s will becomes our first priority, things usually work out better for us. That’s why Jesus said that we need to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. (Matthew 6:33) Whether long term or short term, seeking God’s righteousness in every situation will always lead to the best result.

Another virtue we can learn from the Sunflower is patience. Even though the Sunflower grows more quickly than usual, it still takes a while. It is the same with our prayers. One of the reasons why we tend to pray last after trying out other options is that most of the time we have to wait for our prayers to be answered. Unfortunately, patience is not natural to us, but as Jeremiah said, “it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” (Lamentations 3:26) We receive strength when we wait on God and like the Sunflower, the more we wait the more we find ourselves turning to him.

Learning to wait on God usually comes after suffering the consequences of choices made in haste. I am not an expert on Sunflowers, but I think it may be safe to guess that they don’t get many chances to figure out where to turn. Maybe it is written into their DNA. Probably, knowing where to turn is as natural to them as breathing is to us. Unlike the Sunflower though, we are allowed to continue trying until we learn to make God our first and only option. One of the things I love about God the most is that he doesn’t hold our past against us. He rejoices when we finally understand the principle that he has created the Sunflower to teach us.

I am still learning how to turn to him first. The process is not easy. It is filled with hardship and disappointments, but when I witness the results that come after turning to him first I cannot go back to the way it was before. Now as the song says, “I will turn to you as the flower to the sun. I will wait on you like a farmer waits for rain. I will run to you like a river to the ocean. In the midst of my perplexity and pain, remembering that you remain the same, I will turn to you.”
