Inspiration Behind the Music

The New Testament is filled with greetings and salutations. We find them especially in the epistles. My favorite one is found in I Thessalonians 5:23-24. These verses have become my favorite passage of scripture. They remind me of God’s intention for all believers. They remind me that the work that God is doing in each of our hearts will be completed, not at his coming, but before he comes. These verses also reassure me that once his work is done, He is able to preserve me in that condition. In other words, the fruit of the Spirit does not rot. It remains just as fragrant, lovely and beautiful at the consummation of our faith as we received them in the beginning of our walk with God.

In the conclusion to his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul begins, “now may the God of peace sanctify you completely”. It is true that sanctification is a work of a lifetime, but I really appreciate how verse 24 shows that God can bring every believer to a point in their Christian experience where sin is completely expelled from their lives. Sin is not inevitable for the believer. This doesn’t mean that once sin is expelled from our lives that we have arrived at a point where growth is not necessary. Paul is just saying that every believer who trusts fully in Jesus will eventually have the character of Jesus.

He continues, “and may your whole spirit and body be preserved unto the coming of Jesus Christ.” Paul is showing us here that God deals with us holistically. The body and the spirit are one. They are not two separate entities. (Genesis 2:7) What you believe will influence your behavior and how you behave will determine your character. This is why Paul says to both the Corinthians and the Romans that we will be judged according to our deeds. (Romans 2:6) (II Corinthians 5:10) This is why the preservation of the ripened fruit of the spirit is necessary. If we keep his word hidden in our hearts, it will manifest in our actions and we will be preserved until the second coming of Jesus.

“He who has called you is faithful who also will do it.” (I Thessalonians 5:24) God has demonstrated his faithfulness and commitment to the human race by calling us to himself, but he just doesn’t call us. He recreates us into his image. As long as we trust Him, we can rest with sweet assurance that he will Finish what he started. We may fall short sometimes, but the more we look to Jesus, the more like him we will become and the same power that is recreating us in to his image will preserve us.

It doesn’t matter how corrupt our world is becoming. It doesn’t matter how severe our trials may be or how difficult the path of righteousness may get. The promises of our Savior are sure. They are our firm foundation upon which we stand. (II Timothy 2:19) I am very thankful that these verses have been preserved for us that we may gain insight into God’s intention for us. It is the best salutation anyone could ever receive. It was Paul’s desire that these verses would become a reality in the lives of those reading his letter to the Thessalonians. It is my desire for myself and also for you.
