Inspiration Behind the Music
Have you ever wondered about the history of Money and why we began assigning value to it? I have thought about this and I’m sure there is an answer. I haven’t done any research on this question, but I guess the easy answer would be that it is valuable because it is not available to all. It is acquired only by effort and it usually takes money to make money.
Even more valuable than money is gold and it has held its value from ancient times until now. It is much more scarce now than it was in ancient times, so most likely, it is even more valuable now than it was then. the California Gold Rush of the 19th century is a very good example of the sacrifices many are willing to make to acquire it. I once heard a story about a gold miner who had fallen in to the deep part of a river near to the area where he was searching. He was wearing a vest with large pockets filled with the gold he had mined that day and could have taken it off in order to swim to the surface of the water, but because he just could not part with the gold in his vest, he drowned.
One of the reasons why gold has retained its value over thousands of years, is it’s longevity. It is unaffected by air, moisture, and does not corrode easily. King David, the author of the Psalms must have been aware of the special qualities of gold, because as a king of Israel he had lots of it. But, there was something he valued even more than gold, Something that stretches beyond the boundaries of time into eternity.
Psalms 111
7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. 8 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.
Psalms 119
127 ¶Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.
Like gold, God’s commandments are timeless. they never lose value. As our world becomes more and more secularized and the morality of many is defined by what makes them happy, the commandments of God will continue to rise in value to the seeker of truth.
Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the truth.” David said in Psalm 119:142 “thy law is truth.” If we have Christ, we have the truth and this truth is in God’s law. Someone may ask, why is the law of God valuable? It is valuable because it is the foundation of God’s government. (Psalms 97:2) When this world fades in to obscurity, God’s kingdom will remain. Now while we wait, his kingdom is within. He is enthroned in our hearts by faith demonstrated in unswerving obedience to his law. His law is a treasure that will gain value even as eternity roles on. It is much more valuable than gold. Gold May appear to be more valuable now, but in the Earth made new and in the New Jerusalem, gold will be the pavement for the feet of the redeemed. It will be the material from which our houses are built. It will be worth just as much as dust or sand is now. However, the law of God treasured in the hearts of the redeemed, both now and in eternity, will give greater and still greater insight into the character of the God they love.
David looked forward to that time and so do we and everything else pales in comparison to the treasure of Christ and his law that we hold in our hearts. Likewise, we exclaim with him “I love your commandments more than gold.
neville I am never disappointed by your music you are a great instrument in the hand of God!!
This awesome and am blessed… God continue blessing you and thy work.
The song ‘I’d rather have Jesus’ came to mind after reading your devotional. For me this is absolute truth. There is nothing I value more than a relationship with God and the law describes the rules and boundaries of my awesome friendship. I would give up everything to remain best friends with Jesus. Even though I do wish to live a comfortable life, I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world could ever give me, even more than a oneness with my fiancé, something I desire beyond words. I simply cannot live without Him.
Someone I know died today. I’ve cried and will most certainly cry again. I prayed for the comfort of his family and prayed my belief that I would see him in the first resurrection. I believe he loved God and that people saw the commandments alive in his devotion to God and the way he treated others.
I think life, when lived at it’s optimum is a class; you either pass or flunk, it’s class ‘Getting to know God 101’ with compulsory replication tests. But retakes are free and limitless, the end date of the course is death; when you receive your pass or fail certificate determining your final destination; to burn to ashes on earth (hell) or to live forever; 1000 years in heaven and then eternity back here on earth in our new homes. Death is when my friends name, as well as ourselves, if/when we die is written in the book of life.
We’re all God’s Law students and we must get work experience in this world’s Practice.
*EDIT
The song ‘I’d rather have Jesus’ came to mind after reading your devotional on. I understand it to be about valuing the guidelines God has given us in order to enjoy life to it’s fullest. How much do you want it is the question, I suppose. For me, and this may get me into problems but truth is truth, there is nothing I value more than a relationship with God and the law describes the rules and boundaries of my awesome friendship with Him. It tells me how to make Him happy, how to make Us happy. I would give up everything to remain best friends with Jesus. Even though I do wish to live a comfortable and at times lavish life, I’d rather have Jesus than anything this world could ever give me, even more than a oneness with my fiancé, something I desire beyond words. I simply cannot live without Him.
Someone I know fell asleep today. He died. I’ve cried briefly and will most certainly cry again. He was a wonderfully funny and gentle man. I prayed for the comfort of his family and prayed my belief that I would see him in the first resurrection. I believe he loved God and that people saw the commandments alive in his relationship with God and the way he treated others troughout his life.
I think life, when lived at it’s optimum is a class; you either pass or flunk, it’s class ‘Getting to know God 101’ with compulsory replication tests. But retakes are free and limitless, the end date of the course is death; but here’s the catch, what you’ve done doesn’t determine where you go, it’s the truth and depth of your relationship, it’s how much you’ve grown to love Him.
When you die. you’ve decided the certificate you receive, you’ve determined your final destination; to burn to ashes on earth (hell) or to live forever; 1000 years in heaven and then eternity back here on earth in our new homes. We have that choice. Will we truly like/ be able to adapt to what Heaven has to offer? Purity, peace, joy, a safari park, holy music, a veggie diet, a smoke-free zone, and most importantly God. If not, it’s ok, He can help you. If you don’t want His help that’s ok too.
Death is when my friends name, as well as ours, if/when we die is written in the Book of Life.
We’re all God’s Law students and we must experience knowing Him in this world’s Practice to be content up there.
A thought I would like to share to expand on your post Neville: The kind of gold that David had was valuable and precious to them, and even more so, it is now precious; yet, the gold that he and mankind desires is unrefined gold, just as our character’s in comparison to God’s is unrefined. God desires to make us pure and holy, and His law is the definition of His character: pure and holy. The gold we see in the streets of heaven is transparent, and thus, God’s character and law is transparent, it allows us to see clearly, just as we who now see, darkly, as through a glass, will then see face to face. We need our characters to be transparent, and allow God to shine through us, as He is doing with you and all who desire His character to be manifested in our lives. His law let’s us see how much refining we really do need. Just as the opaqueness of our character dims the world, that we interact with, of His perfect righteousness. Yet, He is calling for His bride to be made ready, and soon, we shall see our King. May your music continue to inspire people to live for our great God who is love and of value greater than all the gold this world has ever seen.
Blessings dear brother in Christ, may His light shine through you and your music, and may others see the Divine working through you as you seek to do His will and learn of Him!
Kevin
Hello Kevin,
thank you for your thoughts. I really appreciate them, especially what you said about transparency.
Amazing!!
To think that some day, all the things that we value now in our society such as the “Gold”,will be of no value as is the sand and the soil we step on everyday and that the LAW OF GOD which does not seem so valuable today when in fact it really is, will some day remind us of how we disregarded the most valuable thing while here on earth. Thank you brother Neville for echoing David on this very important subject of our SALVATION!!
And the music………. Awesome as always!
@Tshepo is right …. YOU NEVER DISSAPPOINT!!!!
God bless you brother Neville
I hope to see you in heaven someday!!!!!
