Inspiration Behind the Music
I sat at the piano, waiting for something to happen, but after sitting there for an hour I began to wonder if my creative juices would ever flow again. The anxiety that comes with writer’s block is very much a reality for every song writer, especially if the writer is trying to have one song completed every month.
Some song writers don’t have to try to come up with music or lyrics. One time the Gospel Artist Donnie McClurkin said to me, “I don’t really write songs. Songs find me.” I have also had this experience. I would be doing something totally unrelated to music and all of a sudden, both the melody and the lyric comes to me and there is nothing left to do except go into my home studio and begin planning how the song should be recorded.
I wish I could say that the majority of my songs were written in this way, but if I said that they were, I would be lying. In fact most of my music comes through prayer, searching the scriptures or from inspirational statements I have heard. My creative juices are not always flowing. I need to have my pump primed or else my creative juices will not flow.
I was a new born in Christ at the time and up until then, when I would sit down to write, it never occurred to me that I should begin with prayer. However, after two or three hours I can’t remember exactly how long, I felt impressed that I should give my anxiety and the creative process to God. Not too long after I prayed, the words Peace be Still fell heavily upon my mind. It didn’t take me long to figure out what the music should sound like either. If my memory serves me correctly, the music came to me a very short time after I began playing the piano.
If you’re familiar with the stories in the four Gospels, then you should know that the words “peace be still” were spoken by Jesus after waking up from a nap. (Mark 4:35-41) However, this wasn’t a tipical nap that you take in the middle of the day. The Bible tells us that Jesus and his disciples were in a boat in the middle of a storm on the sea of Galilee. The disciples who were professional seaman, did all they could to keep the boat from sinking, but the harder they tried, the situation only got worse. Then just like the experience that inspired this song, They turned to Jesus, but Jesus was their last option as he was mine.
Thankfully, Jesus did not hold that against them and if we make the same mistake as the disciples, he will not hold it against us. He is ready to come to our assistance as soon as we call upon him. There is power in his word. The creation of this world is enough evidence that what ever our Lord says happens. If he can speak light and life into existence, separate oceans from the land, tell a raging storme to be still, then he can do the same with our problems no matter how impossible they seam.
But why could Jesus sleep in a sinking boat in the middle of a raging storme? The reason is that he had absolute confidence in his Father. He knew that the safest place to be was in his Father’s will. Sometimes we look at our circumstances and we become anxious, but we need to remember what Jesus said to the storme that night. He doesn’t only speak to stormes, he speaks to you and me. The same peace he had in that boat that night on the sea of Galilee is the same peace he wants to give us. This is why he says, “My peace I leave with you. (John 14:27) His peace leaves no room for anxiety. (Philipians 4:6-7) We can have his peace as long as we believe.
