Inspiration Behind the Music

Do you talk to yourself sometimes? Don’t be ashamed to admit it if you do. I have heard that it is okay to talk to yourself, but if you answer yourself then perhaps you might be crazy. I admit that sometimes I talk to myself and sometimes I even answer myself. No, I don’t have an imaginary friend, And I haven’t been accused of being crazy, at least not yet. However since my mind is always going, many times I have found myself thinking out loud. I believe that if we speak positively to ourselves, talking to ourselves is not only good, but necessary.

The Bible tells us of a time when David felt that it was necessary to talk to himself. I believe that this story is recorded for us as an example of what to do when faced with similar situations. What do you do when you have cried so much that you don’t have any more tears left? What do you do when all your friends turn against you? David’s friends did not only turn against him, they wanted to stone him to death. This story is found in 1 Samuel 30:1-5. We know that he talked to himself. But how did he do it? Verse 6 gives us the answer.

“And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.”
1 Samuel 30:6 KJV

David didn’t just encourage himself, He encouraged himself in the Lord. There is a difference. I know that there are motivational writers who encourage their readers to look at themselves in the mirror and tell themselves how wonderful they are. No matter how wonderful we might think we are, life has a way of backing us in to a corner sometimes. It is times like these when self affirmations are not enough. This may be the reason why the suicide rate is so high. The story in 1 Samuel 30 doesn’t tell us what David said to himself, but I can imagine that he may have said something like this.

“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.”
Psalms 62:5 KJV

I can also imagine him encouraging himself like this.

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
Psalms 43:5 KJV

Now you know the verse that inspired this song. Our expectation is truly from him, but what should we be expecting? We should expect that God will do exactly what he said. However we cannot expect anything from God if we are not familiar with his promises. I encourage you to day. Begin filling your mind with the promises of God and you will find that they will come to mind when you need them most. You may even find yourself speaking them out loud and encouraging yourself in the same way David did.
