Inspiration Behind the Music

Donald Trump has had a lot to say about illegal immigration. In spite of the fact that many find his comments offensive, it seems like more people agree with him and his popularity has grown. But why has Donald Trump’s comments resonated with so many people? Why does a wall separating the US from Mexico seam attractive to so many? I am not an expert, but from what I have heard, many are concerned about the strain illegal immigration can place on social services. The lack of resources is not just an American problem, it is a global problem.

Our world is shrinking and it’s resources are being depleted. According to Google, the population of our world is over Seven Billion. This may be the reason why some scientists are searching the heavens for a planet with an environment similar to Earth. It is not hard to see that at some point in the future, our world will not be able to sustain us. What will we do then? Where will the refugees from Earth go and will they be accepted?

The good news is that we have already been accepted. Our loving Creator foresaw the alienation that sin would cause us and has provided a path to legal citizenship in his universal kingdom. Unfortunately, most will not choose this path. This world is all that they will know. It is their home.

However, we who have accepted God’s pathway to citizenship are not content with the best this world can offer, especially since the best this world can offer is not worthy to be compared with what our Creator has for us at the end of the path. (Romans 8:18) Another reason to not settle for the best this world can offer is that it is not guaranteed to all. Many are migrating to the US and other countries where opportunities for success are available, but not all succeed or even come close to the success they seek.

Abraham the father of faith, chose the pathway to citizenship our Creator marked out for believers. In fact, the Bible says that he looked for that city who’s maker and builder is God. (Hebrews 11:10) His faith was so strong that when God told him to go, he went not knowing where he was going. (Hebrews 11:8) Abraham’s experience teaches us that the path to our citizenship in the kingdom of God begins with faith that is demonstrated by obedience.

God’s pathway to citizenship is none other than the path of righteousness that every believer must walk. We don’t walk this path alone, because he is leading. We are walking in his footsteps. It is a narrow path and those who are on it will be treated the same way Jesus was. According to Jesus, if his followers were of this world they would be loved by the world, because the world loves it’s own. (John 15:18-19) We are in this world, but we are not of this world. Like Abraham and the patriarchs, we are strangers and pilgrims on the Earth. (Hebrews 11:13)

The Bible tells us that our citizenship is in Heaven. (Philippians 3:20) This is why the song says, “I am a pilgrim I am a stranger just traveling through this wilderness.” This world is a wilderness to all who are being lead on the path of righteousness. There is a wall around the city of God, but there are open gates on each side welcoming every pilgrim who has chosen God’s pathway to citizenship.

How much do you identify with this world? Do your affections and life style declare that you are a stranger here? Those who are citizens of God’s kingdom are strangers here, but those who only have citizenship here in the countries of this world will be strangers there and cannot enter the city of God. If you are not a stranger here, I encourage you to choose God’s pathway to citizenship inn his universal kingdom and become a pilgrim.
