Inspiration Behind the Music
This phrase is not in the Bible, but I’m very sure that the principle is in there somewhere. “Be the change you want to see.” I heard a story once about a woman who was a salted in broad day light on the streets of New York. People passed by, very much aware of the situation, but did nothing to help. When the media got a hold of the story many were outraged that no one helped. It is very possible that many of those who passed her by were also outraged when they found out that no one helped. Perhaps, they may have been more outraged than those who were not there. We should expect them to be outraged, especially after realizing that they had the opportunity to help, but chose not to get involved.
Could it be that none of them felt they could do anything about it? Could it be that they believed someone else would help? It is very easy to criticize others when we recognize neglected opportunities for kindness, but how many opportunities to show kindness have you passed up lately? Jesus said “You are the light of the world”. (Matthew 5:14) Light cannot be hidden unless it is closed up on all sides by something that does not allow it to shine through. If the purpose of light is to illuminate, why try to hide it? Could it be that there are areas in our own lives we would prefer not to see?
No one likes to have their sins exposed and this is exactly what light does, but Jesus, the light of the world, the revealer of all our sins, has committed himself to the restoration of mankind. Justice requires death for sin, but Jesus, not wanting to give us up, gave his own life in exchange for ours. (John 10:17-18) While we wait for the fulfillment of the promise of eternal life given to all believers we should never leave to anyone else an opportunity to show kindness to the unfortunate.
Christ did not command one of the angels to come to Earth in his place, he came On this expensive Erin himself. “IF God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (I John 4:11) The next time you are tempted to pass on the opportunity to show kindness to someone else, consider that someone else may just be you. The light we receive from him is the light that lights the world.
