Because I am a songwriter, I find myself listening more to songs than to the artists who perform them. Let me explain what I mean. Not all songs are the same. Some songs are very interesting harmonically, but the words don’t say anything at all. There are many songs like this. On the other hand, there are many songs that have powerful messages but are not very interesting harmonically. This is why I am always delighted when I hear a song that has the perfect blend of harmonic complexity and lyrical substance.

Songs like that make me say, man why didn’t I think of that? I find myself saying those words, because my ear is always to the ground and the wheels of my mine are always turning, trying to come up with what I would call the perfect song.

Since I have a very high regard for the Bible, which I believe to be the word of God, my goal has always been to weave messages and principles from Scripture into my music. I usually never quote the scripture exactly the way it’s written, but I have always tried my best to inject the message and principles from the scripture into my lyrics. Frankly, I have always been reluctant to set music to Scripture exactly the way it is written. The reason is that scripture is not written in the way that we speak today. However, for the last four weeks, that is exactly what I have been doing. I can only give the credit to God, since I have tried it before and it was very difficult.

When Yolanda Palmer called me and asked me if I would write songs for their Bible study project, I didn’t think there was any reason to expect that it would be different. In fact, I was not confident that I could keep all the words intact for many of the Scriptures given to me, since many of the Bible verses were not the kind most songwriters would choose to set to music. Before I set out to write, I always begin with prayer. So as usual I prayed and then I sat at the piano to write. The music began to flow as it never has before. I believe that I can say with much confidence that God directed the whole process. In the last four weeks I have written and recorded about a dozen songs. I am so pleasantly surprised with the result that I have decided to do an album of scripture songs. Not all of the songs that I have written for this Bible study project will be included, but many of them will. Here are the scriptures that I enjoyed putting to Music the most.

Acts 1:9-11
Titus 2:11-13 Hebrews 9:28
Revelation 14:6-7
Isaiah 66:22-23
Isaiah 49:15 Jeremiah 31:3
Matthew 24:27 Revelation 1:7
John 14:1-3

There are other passages of Scripture that I am planning to set to music on my own. I guess you can say that I have the scripture songwriting bug now. As a courtesy to the palmers I will wait until their Bible study song project is through and released before I release my scripture song album. In the meantime, if you have any passages of scripture that you would like to hear set to music, please let me know. You can either use the contact link on this website or you could simply just reply in the comment section below. As you can see from the example above these passages of Scripture contain no more than three or four verses. So, when you send me your passage of scripture, make sure that it meets these specifications as well. I am looking forward to hearing from you and I’m curious to see what passages of scripture I’m going to receive.

  1. Hi I recently heard you sing Phillippians 4:8 at a concert, is there any way to get the notes or recording of this?
